Palermo is the capital of the Sicilian island and is one of the richest cities in the region. There are many things to see in a trip, even a quick one, through its streets: - the Politeama theater, in 'Pompeian' neoclassical style; - the Massimo theater, is the third in size among the opera houses in Europe and has perfect acoustics; - the four 'canti', or the four sides of Piazza Vigliena, octagonal in shape; - church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, in the historic center of the city, finely decorated; - the Praetorian Fountain, located a few steps from the church in Piazza Pretoria, from the Renaissance period; - church of Santa Maria dell'ammiraglio, one of the UNESCO sites in Palermo, overlooks Piazza Bellini and is a mixture of Byzantine and Norman styles; - the church of San Cataldo, also a UNESCO site for Norman architecture, is in fact a unique example; - the nearby beach of Mondello, just ten kilometers from the city, which can also be traveled on foot following the long tree-lined avenues from the city center; - the Porta Felice, one of the ancient gates of the city which is the entrance from the sea side to the Cassaro, one of the oldest streets in Palermo; - the cathedral of Palermo, the main place of worship, also a UNESCO site, has a very ancient history; - the Norman palace, one of the most visited monuments on the island, currently the seat of the Regional Assembly, is the oldest royal palace in Europe; - the new gate, adjacent to the Norman Palace, was for centuries the only land access point to the city. Impossible not to stop and taste the thousand gastronomic specialties of the city while walking around visiting the various places.
