The alleys of Castelluccio Valmaggiore

Castelluccio Valmaggiore is a small and charming village in the Daunia mountains. More precisely, it was built on the slopes of Mount Cornacchia, in the valley of the Celone stream. This was an agricultural village that has unfortunately depopulated today. Its events are first linked to the Byzantines, who built a castle here (hence the name of the town). Originally Castelluccio had a triangular plan, where the castle was located at the top and at the two other vertices there were the doors, Porta del Pozzo and Porta del Piscero. All around there were fortified houses to act as walls. Today the original structure of the village remains above all the Byzantine tower. 20 meters high, it is characterized by its cylindrical shape. Today only 2 of the original 3 floors survive, connected by a spiral staircase. The tower was intended for sighting and in fact dominates the valley. Later, Castelluccio followed the vicissitudes of the territory passing from domination to domination. Finally he took part in the events that led to the unification of Italy.
