The pearl of the Ligurian Riviera

Where: framura
(Framura)
Genre: culture   wine and food   folklore

Located on the Ligurian coast, the small town of Framura is located within one of the many coves, typical of the Ligurian Riviera. The highest peak in the area is Mount Serro. Important historical evidence can be found throughout the entire territory starting from the Lombard period. At the end of the early Middle Ages the territory passed under the dominion of the Da Passano family, who left as testimony some fortifications of the ninth century. In the 12th century, the expansion of the Republic of Genoa into the Ligurian Riviera also included the territory of Framura; until the fall of the maritime coast of the same name and the annexation with the Kingdom of Sardinia. The historicity of the territory is visible walking through the alleys of its hamlets; the hamlet of Costa is the most important from a cultural and architectural point of view. Nor is the Carolingian Tower an example; built in the 9th century as a watchtower. The church of San Martino, built in the 12th century, represents an architectural example not very present in Italy; in fact the bell tower, positioned in front of the façade, is a common style in southern France. Moving to the hamlet of Anzo it is possible to admire the church of the Madonna della Neve. The church has a facade typical of the neo-Gothic style on the outside, the inside of the church houses paintings of particular value. Fulcrum of the religious life of the citizens is the Madonna del Mare. No sacred building in the area is attributable to the Virgin of the Sea; since his statue is placed on the top of the rock to protect the town and its inhabitants. The most important religious event of the is the procession for the Madonna del Mare, which begins in the church of the Madonna della Neve and ends on the coast; even if no iconography is carried, the presence of faith on the part of the inhabitants is palpable. During the festival some of the typical dishes are served such as focaccia, tarts and pesto alla genovese.
