Cosenza is a capital of the Calabrian province, has 105,000 inhabitants and stands 250 meters above sea level. It boasts a glorious history: prehistoric settlement, capital of the Bruzii, Roman civitas, cultural reference in the Middle Ages, it is today the favorite base for excursions on the Sila. It rises at the confluence of the two rivers Crati and Basento. The main urban artery is dedicated to the philosopher Telesio, a native of Cosenza (1508) and precursor of Descartes; it winds sinuous and captivating through the persuasive medieval quarter. The Cathedral is valuable, built in the 12th century and subsequently rebuilt in the Baroque style; portal, rose window and apse are original. Noteworthy is the Archbishop's Palace, containing precious treasure of high goldsmith workmanship and Byzantine finds. Pleasant to the visitor is Piazza XV Marzo, with the Prefecture, the theater and the Academy of Cosenza. The Civic Museum is worth a visit, with interesting finds from the Bruzia necropolis, IX-VII century BC. C.. Relaxing is the Villa Comunale which dominates the entire city from above and offers wonderful glimpses of the Sila.
