(Maniago)

Maniago is a town in Friuli, in the province of Pordenone, at an altitude of 283 meters above sea level, has 12,000 inhabitants. It is the major center of that territory called 'Friuli valleys and dolomites'. Its first documentary attestation dates back to 981 in a letter addressed to the Patriarch of Aquileia. But much older finds, attributable to Celts, Romans and even Neolithic peoples, betray how Maniago is a much more remote settlement. In the 15th century it became known for the creation of knives, wisely forged by skilled blacksmiths; they also armed the army of the Serenissima. The Cathedral is dedicated to San Mauro Martire, renovated in 400, it is supposed to have insisted on a previous religious site; noteworthy are the portal and the gothic style rose window, the interior is quite interesting. Piazza Italia represents the beating heart of Maniago, in fact it is overlooked by pleasant 15th and 16th century villas. A final mention deserves the medieval castle of which unfortunately only ruins remain, to be enjoyed in any case the spectacular view of the surrounding valleys.
