Castelpagano is a town in the province of Benevento, whose name seems to date back to the Roman conquest. The village still appears as still in the Norman era as the architecture has remained very well preserved with the imposing towers and stone facades. Piazza Municipio, the town center, is occupied by the imposing feudal palace with the pillory column, to which the criminals apparently were linked for public infamy during the Spanish domination. Another important square is Piazza Garibaldi, in front of which the monument to the fallen of the two world wars is clearly visible. Near the square there is also the church of San Rocco, built after the bubonic plague epidemic that hit the town strongly. Next to the church there is the municipal pine forest, a green area that represents a meeting point for citizens. In the hamlet of Carmine, near the Tammarecchia torrent, there is the church of the Madonna del Carmelo, where a procession arrives every year from the chapel of San Rocco. Among the most important traditional events is the Porcini Mushroom Festival which has been held since 1996 in the third week of September.
