Fermo is a wonderful medieval village of 36,000 inhabitants, the provincial capital, in the Marche region. Located on a hill 319 meters above sea level, it is just 6 km from the Adriatic Sea. As soon as you approach Fermo you immediately notice the dark roofs, 3 soaring bell towers, a perfectly preserved access door and sections of the surrounding walls. A maze of alleys and streets crosses the entire village, arousing amazement and wonder for so much beauty. An important cultural center, it houses a remarkable library in the Palazzo degli Studi and an equally important picture gallery in the Palazzo dei Priori. Remarkable is the Teatro dell'Aquila built by Cosimo Morelli at the end of 1700. Fermo hosts many historical fountains and parks. Piazza Grande is the heart of the city. To visit the Gothic Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and the Church of the Carmine. Under the hill on which Fermo stands there is a real underground city made up of a dense network of tunnels; the underground masterpiece consists of the Roman cisterns, a work of extraordinary engineering with 30 rooms for a total of 2,000 square meters, from the Augustan period, in excellent condition and perfectly accessible.
