Parma is a town of 200,000 inhabitants, the provincial capital of Emilia Romagna, former capital of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza between the mid-500s and the mid-800s and in 2020 awarded the title of capital of Italian culture. The tourist visit can only start from Piazza Duomo, where the Cathedral itself rises, from 1100 and considered among the most representative Romanesque works of Italy, with important frescoes and bas-reliefs inside and the Baptistery, from 1200, entirely covered in marble rose with sculptures inside from 1300-1400. Another valuable religious building is the Abbey of San Giovanni, late Mannerist with Renaissance frescoes and a splendid dome. The Citadel, on the other hand, is a military building, a mighty pentagonal fortress today the center of the district of the same name and a park hosting cultural events. Another green lung of the city is Eridania Park, formerly the seat of the sugar factory of the same name, today it houses the Paganini auditorium. Palazzo Pilotta, the work of the Farnese Dukes in 1500, houses the National Gallery, the Farnese Theater, the Archaeological Museum and the Palatine Library. The last obligatory stop is the Teatro Regio.
