The wonderful Scala dei Turchi

La Scala dei Turchi is one of the most famous geosites in Sicily and one of the most popular destinations for visitors; is located in Realmonte, a seaside resort near Agrigento. The name comes from past piracy raids by the Saracens, Arabs and, by convention, Turks; the Turkish pirates, in fact, found shelter in this area less beaten by the winds and represented a safer landing place. The scenarios that the Scala dei Turchi is able to offer are truly suggestive: the optical white of the marl cliff, partly clayey and partly limestone, forms a wonderful contrast with the blue of the sea and the blue of the sky. The erosion of the sea has carved comfortable natural seats in the marl where you can lie down and sunbathe with your feet overlooking the sea. When the sun sets, the white of the Scala turns into a wonderful golden orange, making it an even more magical place. The popularity given by Andrea Camilleri's Commissario Montalbano, who set some of his stories here, has further contributed to making this magnificent area famous!
