Farra D 'Alpago, triumph of nature

Where: alpago
(Alpago)
Genre: culture   nature

Farra D 'Alpago is a small town of 2,800 inhabitants, in the province of Belluno. Strategically positioned, it is almost equidistant from Venice, Treviso, Belluno and Cortina. Set at the foot of the Belluno Prealps that protect it, it is located at 395 meters above sea level. Another naturalistic pearl is represented by the Lake of Santa Croce, which bathes it. The village obviously thrives on fishing, crafts and tourism. Its origin is Lombard as the word farra means Lombard war camp. The nearby cansiglio forest is one of the largest in Italy, included in the Natura 2000 network project, it is a protected natural oasis where we find flora and fauna of considerable value: white willow, ash and wild rose among the plants; the badger, the red woodpecker and the fox among the animals. Although as seen nature is the undisputed lady, the artistic-monumental imprint is remarkable, especially with a religious background. There are many votive shrines scattered around the village, including private ones, as well as many votive capitals. Churches of interest are those of the Madonna del Lago, San Virgilio and Madonna di Runal, as well as the parish church with an elegant stone bell tower.
