Foglianise, is a small village of just over 3000 inhabitants located in the province of Benevento, immersed in a suggestive naturalistic setting, in the middle of a mountainous agglomeration, from which Mount Taburno stands out, more than 300 meters above sea level. The town, which seems to be dominated and almost observed by the imposing rocky mount Caruso, is one of the oldest cities of the Roman era. Its name derives from an ancient landowner in the area. The economy and the importance of these funds and this territory grew considerably thanks to the connection with the via Latina. The appearance of the village is very elegant as the town plan has preserved the Lombard conformation. The dominant element of the architecture of the buildings is the local stone which can be found in the facades of the buildings, in the streets, in the steps and in the portals. The historic center is rich in historical artifacts, as well as doors and arches there is a Roman column, which testifies to the place where the bells of the church of Santa Maria were melted during the war of the empire. Of considerable religious importance is the famous cave of the Archangel Michael set in the walls of Mount Caruso. After an apparition of the archangel, as the tradition of the Gargano tells, it became a place of devotion and twice a year, the faithful pilgrim there in prayer climbing along the side of Mount Caruso. The places of worship that are part of the town are different, such as the Church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli and the sixteenth-century palace, first seat of a convent and now the town hall; the Parish Church of San Ciriaco, the patron saint of the city; the Church of the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Body of Christ, home to numerous paintings and works by important artists; the Church of Sant'Anna, where you can admire works in the Baroque style. For those looking for old testimonies of places of worship, Foglianise is a must.
