Agnone is a Molise municipality known above all for being the seat of the oldest plant in the world for the casting of bells, the Pontifical Marinelli bell foundry, founded in 1040 and authorized to use the pontifical coat of arms. A museum is also dedicated to the bells, which tells the story of the foundry and the methods used for its production. The environmental quality has meant that it was awarded important awards, which attract many visitors. The city seems to have Samnite origins, and in the Palazzo San Francesco, today the municipal seat, a fragment of the Osca table, found in the third century, which belonged to the Samnites, is preserved. Religious places of greatest interest are the church of San Marco Evangelista, which stands next to a belvedere transformed into a public park. It seems to have been built by the Borrello counts. But also the church of San Francesco, which is considered a national monument, and which houses frescoes by Molise Paolo Gamba. The oldest tradition of the place is an event held on the night of Christmas Eve, the ''Ndocciata, a parade with huge torches carried in procession.
