Things to do in Italy > Trompia Valley

The Sistine of Val Trompia.

Where: tavernole-sul-mella
(Chiesa di San Filastrio.)
Genre: culture

The Church is the religious symbol of the whole valley and is inserted in a cemetery complex and surrounded by arcades, which gave hospitality to travelers and pilgrims. Dating back to the 1300s, the facade is decorated with the figure of San Cristoforo and other deans and inside it preserves frescoes that completely cover the walls. The dates and names of the deceased from the 15th to the 18th century are engraved in graffiti in the side chapel, a memorial to which the people of Tavernola are very fond. The frescoes on the counter-façade wall date back to 1523, but the other religious figures, attributable to the school of Foppa and Ferramola, predate them. The Sacristy, known as the Sistine, is decorated with scenes from the life of San Domenico, in bright colors and with celestial vaults between the wings of the Angels. In one of these the Saint is with Saint Francis in prayer against the scourges of war, plague and hunger, themes that are still relevant today. Finally you can admire a fourteenth-century painting of the Last Supper, unfortunately barked, where the apostles have serene faces, in profile at the table set with peasant breads and woven baskets.
