(Montecastrilli)
Genre: culture

Montecastrilli is an Umbrian town located in the center of an agricultural area full of colorful farmhouses and plots of cultivated land; thanks to its natural environment, the village has always been chosen for its healthiness. According to tradition, it owes its name to the Latin word 'castra', or encampments, which refers to the historical fact that Hannibal placed them on his way to Rome. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the town was governed by the Lombards and then by the Byzantines, to finally pass into the hands of the government of the church; It became an independent municipality first in 1810 and then officially with the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. One of the attractions of the village are the city walls, which surround the city, with crenellated towers. Two doors that open in the walls; Porta Merina and Medieval Gate. Another unmissable attraction is the parish church of San Nicolò containing a wooden crucifix from the 1400s and the church of Santa Chiara annexed to the monastery of the Poor Clares, with a large 1700 canvas inside.
