Earth and Man, Vidor's mammoth museum

(Prealpi Trevigiane)
Genre: culture

In Crocetta del Montello there is a museum that is in many ways unique in Italy. It is a paleontological collection of ancient animal species, including a specimen of mammoth that was found in the territory of Vidor. The exhibition itinerary, however, unfolds through various rooms, the purpose of which is to describe the path that led from the birth of life on Earth to the appearance of man. It is thus possible to see some dinosaurs reconstructed on the basis of the footprints found on Monte Palo. There are also some stuffed animals, which serve to show how man has often caused the extinction of animal species. The mammoth itself, whose bones are in the center of the museum, probably went extinct due to hunting. The Vidor specimen was found in the 1970s and lived in an interglacial period, dying of old age. Other notable finds are the skeleton of a ursus spelaeus, a vegetarian bear, and a chopper, a gift to the museum from Donald C. Johanson who discovered Lucy. The tour ends with a modern specimen of Homo Stupidus.
