Castello dell'Acqua: a holiday dedicated to sport and the Valtellinese tradition

Where: castello-dell-acqua
(Castello dell'Acqua)
Genre: culture   nature   wine and food   folklore

Castello dell'Acqua is a municipality considered 'the garden of the Orobie Alps', since it is a very extensive green area in the province of Sondrio, near the Adda river. Nature and the landscape represent a great wealth as they have always been used for breeding and agriculture, still present activities that have been flanked by a more modern economy and also by tourism. Among the typical raw materials there are: buckwheat, used for the most indigenous gastronomic products, such as polente taragna or pizzoccheri. Cheeses and butter are also typical products, linked to farming. The handicraft is also typical: the working of wood and iron, or the production of the typical 'pezzotti' carpets from Valtellina. In the ancient village there are still ancient buildings that are no longer usable, which however create a striking contrast with the modern and colorful houses. Few are the permanent inhabitants of the area, and between them they are far enough away so that in some districts there is even a single house. The name of the village seems to derive from an ancient family who lived in these areas, the 'Dell'Acqua', who lived in a castle, whose remains are still visible. The origin of the toponym could also be linked to the massive presence of streams, rivers and water in general. In addition to its usefulness in various typical works, water is also a tourist resource. In these areas it is in fact possible to practice some sports such as canyoning, rafting and kayak excursions. Paragliding is also possible, and the presence of the 'Sentiero Valtellina' also allows panoramic excursions by bicycle.
