Pizzo Calabro is a seaside village located two miles from Vibo Valentia, on a cliff overlooking the sea that forms a promontory. Under the town there are many beaches overlooking the crystal clear sea: this makes Pizzo a tourist town, as well as a seafaring one. The attractions in the historic center, on the other hand, are not lacking, testimony of the long history of this city. Pizzo was founded in the Greek era, in the eighth century BC. C, although there are no remains from this era. During the Middle Ages the continuous invasions of the Saracen pirates pushed the inhabitants to move inland. The period of greatest fortune for the town was between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when the castle was built with its tower, which is the oldest part of the building. The castle is called Castello Murat because tradition says that Joachim Murat, king of Naples, was imprisoned and then killed here, found guilty of raising the Calabrians against the Bourbons. In fact, Murat is considered one of the supporters of the Unification of Italy.
