In Val Varrone, on the shores of Lake Como, a thousand steps carved into the rock make their way between the houses and the Castle of the small medieval village. The grassy terrace of the square is still fortified and its defensive purpose and refuge for the inhabitants is recognized. The town was founded by the Andreani family who had obtained the fiefdom from the Archbishop of Milan, Ottone Visconti, in 1277. The 16 inhabitants hold the village like a jewel by dotting the ancient stones of the buildings with agaves, geraniums and roses. The steps plunge into the water among the branches of climbing plants and colorful boats that swing moored at the small pier. The central role of the village in commercial exchanges and for the supply between the valleys is testified by the large historical period depicted in the paintings, dated from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century, in the Church of San Tommaso di Canterbury, such as the Adoration of the kings Magi, San Cristoforo, San Francesco and the Epiphany. For those who want to explore the surroundings, they can visit the forts of the Cadorna line, never used and well preserved, which are located above the village in very panoramic places on the lake.
