A day in Zungoli between history and typicality

Where: zungoli
(Zungoli)
Genre: culture   wine and food   folklore

Zungoli is a municipality located on the border between Irpinia and Puglia, and is one of the 11 Campania municipalities that have been counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy. In fact, Zungoli can be defined as a real museum town. There are valuable structures, such as the Norman castle with a quadrangular base, the church of Santa Maria Assunta and the church of San Francesco, which houses the statue of the Madonna of the crowned, an object of particular veneration as it is considered the protector of shepherds. But in the historic center there are also ancient houses and shops, still preserved as they once were. For example, there is an inn dating back to 1920 with original furnishings. And there is also an alley so narrow that it is called the corner of the kiss, because to walk close to it you almost have to kiss. Zungoli is on the paths of transhumance and herding has always been one of the main activities here. Witness the tradition of making podolico caciocavallo, which is aged in tuff caves. Another typical local product is oil, which has won numerous awards for its high quality.
