Daiano, the country that no longer exists

Where: daiano
(Daiano)
Genre: culture   nature

A small village in the province of Trento, Daiano stands at 1160 meters above sea level and has just 700 inhabitants. It constitutes the highest inhabited center in the Val di Fiemme; perched on Mount Rocca, also known as black crow, this mountain was climbed for the first time only in 1875 by Ruggero Rustichelli, in a roped party. The peculiarity of Monte Rocca consists in having been climbed very few times due to its inaccessible shape and the lack of carriage roads and marked paths that allow to reach it. From Daiano obviously you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountain ranges. The country is very old; to visit the parish church of San Tommaso, a rare example of cohesion between Gothic and Baroque styles. In the village there is the ancient castle of Croda, a massive building with Gothic shapes which in the past guaranteed immunity to those sought after by justice. Also worth seeing are the mighty fountains dug out of a single block of porphyry scattered around the town. But the curiosity lies in the fact that Daiano no longer exists since 1st January 2020; it merged with the municipalities of Carano and Varena giving rise to the new municipality of Ville di Fiemme.
