Ponte Buggianese is the symbol of an unconventional Tuscany, the municipality is made up of 6 hamlets and around 80% of its territory belongs to the marsh crater of the Fucecchio marsh. The town is crossed by the Pescia river which runs for 25 km before joining the area of the Fucecchio marshes; the history of the town began in 1500 and is linked to the reclamation and the complex hydrography of the territory. The village that was formed by the descent of some inhabitants from Augustinians of the kon, who called the new village Ponte Bovianum because the inhabited area developed around a small bridge. Around the square of the sanctuary are the buildings that most characterize the town. The church of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio is one of the places of greatest artistic interest in the Nievole Valley; inside there is a unique cycle of frescoes depicting the deposition, the crucifixion of Christ and the last supper of the master Pietro Annigoni. The portrayed characters are characterized by intense expressiveness and the attention to detail allows you to reveal the emotional tension of each character. Jewel of contemporary art is a monument by Jorio Vivarelli, commissioned by the municipality in honor of the fallen of the wars. In fact, the Germans carried out a real carnage in the marshes on 19 May 1944, killing unarmed women, children and men in cold blood. The proximity to the tragedy and to the lost loved ones is testified by the attention that the citizens pay to the care of the places where the massacres took place. The memories of what happened are placed inside the documentation center of the Massacre of the Fucecchio marshes. Outside the inhabited center there is the Fucecchio marsh, a humid area that offers the possibility of being able to cross the river using the small boats, to go on horseback riding or cycling along the banks; inside the via francigena there is a hostel where it is possible to stay. There are many typical dishes of the area such as: eel pasta, frog risotto and fried polenta covered with an eel and tomato sauce. Ponte Buggianese is part of the Tuscan culinary tradition therefore in the city it is possible to eat excellent meat accompanied by a tasty wine.
