Oppido Mamertina is a municipality in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria. The ancient city stood on a hill surrounded by walls and sturdy doors, there was a castle of Norman origin and was equipped with a cathedral, a hospital and a pawnshop. The town managed to remain standing despite the attacks received; today the ruins of the city remain visible and allow visitors to immerse themselves in the history of Oppidium. The economy is mainly based on tourism and agriculture of olive trees and citrus groves. On the territory there are numerous churches that make Oppino Mamertina a destination for religious tourism. The Cathedral of the Assumption is the symbol of the city, it is located in the city center and was built in the neoclassical style. The Latin cross interior has a three naves divided by imposing columns. The church houses an Ecce Homo carved in wood, donated by Bishop Cesonio and the mortal remains of the bishops Coppola and Santo Bergamo. The diocesan museum of the city houses prestigious works and objects of an artistic and religious nature. Main piece is the statue of San Sebastiano. The museum of the art of the tunnel was inaugurated on the need to safeguard and pass on this ancient art, inside there are several works. The museum of peasant art contains objects, photographs and clothes used by peasants in their everyday working life. A typical dessert is the Mamertina, a cake that mixes sweet and savory with the scents of citrus fruits.
