The 'smallest theater in the world'

Where: monte-castello-di-vibio
(Teatro della Concordia)
Genre: culture   fun   useful information

In a village located in the natural beauty of Umbria, near Perugia, there is a place dedicated to entertainment with an unparalleled charm and discreetly known to non-natives especially for its size. The village in question is Monte Castello di Vibio, of medieval and Napoleonic historical mold, and it houses the Teatro della Concordia; considered the smallest in the world, not in actual size; rather by characteristics. It accommodates just 99 people and the humble seating arrangement is combined with minimal and modest architecture that is reflected on the stage. The result is a small center dedicated to the art of unique beauty and simplicity. The building is the only architectural testimony of the miniature style of the 18th century Italian theater. It presents the three elements that Goldoni considered fundamental for building a theater: wooden boxes, bell floors and ceilings made with the 'camorcanna' (barrel chamber) technique. It turned out to be a reflection of the village that currently hosts it, small in size, but immense when seen more closely. The nine builders of the theater said: 'Civilization is not measured in square and cubic meters'. Currently the Teatro della Concordia is also used for conferences and guided tours, and was required to celebrate civil weddings. Since its reopening in 1993 to today, over 150,000 tourists have crossed the threshold and awarded the diploma of total excellence through the travel portal Tripadvisor. It is an experience to live, for those who love art in its essence.
