Asiago is an Italian town of 6,500 inhabitants, in the province of Vicenza, in Veneto. It stands on a plateau at an altitude of 1000 meters surrounded both to the north and to the south by many even 2,000 meters high. The symbol of the center are the public gardens of Piazza Carli which house the fountain of the Faun, a mythological being that gives a touch of magic to the city. The fountain was erected in 1927 and has an octagonal base in red marble, along the sides there are 4 bronze sculptures of woodland animals. The cathedral and the church of San Rocco are also worth visiting. The main center of the plateau was the capital of the Regency of the 7 municipalities, formed in 1310, one of the first autonomous and democratic governments in history, with its own militia. In the nineteenth century with the victory of the French over the Austrians, Veneto became part of the Napoleonic empire, and the regency was dissolved. After the First World War it was totally destroyed and rebuilt only at the end of the hostilities. Asiago is a first-rate tourist resort, both summer and winter and binds its name to its dairy products known all over the world. It is considered one of the coldest alpine centers ever. From the center you can easily reach the Lumera lake, a relief valve for the inhabitants; ideal for walks, it has a playground and an equipped area. The military shrine, a large ossuary monument, collects the remains of soldiers who died in combat and has become the symbol of the entire province. Asiago for her merits in war was awarded the medal for military valor.
