Borzonasca and the rich Ligurian nature

Where: borzonasca
(Borzonasca)
Genre: culture   nature   wine and food

Borzonasca is a town cradled by the gentle slopes of the Ligurian Apennines, in one of the most fascinating and beautiful corners of Italy. The vast territory that embraces it is enclosed between the coast and the highest Ligurian peaks, giving the eyes of those who look at it a rich variety of landscapes. Its history is also rich, probably dating back to around the fourteenth century, and the origin of its name is attributable to the nearby and splendid abbey of Borzone which represents one of the oldest Benedictine settlements in Italy. Let's not forget that the salt road passed through these parts and that most of the commercial activities from here ran towards the whole of northern Italy. Next to the abbey of Borzone, which stands out for its imposing architectural beauty composed of vaults and for the chromatic contrast with the bright green of the surrounding forest, stands the legendary large megalithic face carved in the rock. Even today its existence is shrouded in mystery, but it is thought that it may represent an ancient divinity already celebrated in prehistoric times. Its height is not legendary, which at 7 meters conquers the record as the largest rock sculpture in Europe. Borzonasca is a town with a strong religious tradition whose essence can be grasped in the presence of various architectural works such as the sanctuary of the Santissimo Salvatore, inside which it is possible to admire a 16th century table depicting the Madonna, and the oratory of San Rocco, in the heart of the country. The oldest heart of Borzonasca beats a few meters from its center in the hamlet of Perlezzi, between alleys and suggestive houses, while in its green lung made of woods extends the artificial lake of Giacopiane, in a lush natural environment. To complete so much variety and beauty, there is also a rich gastronomic tradition with local specialties, such as the baciocca cake, which will make your trip to Borzonasca even more irresistible.
