Tuscania, a dip in the Middle Ages

Where: tuscania
(Tuscania)
Genre: culture   useful information

Tuscania, a suggestive medieval land that rises on seven promontories of tufaceous rock, located between the Marta river and the Capecchio stream. City famous above all for the two basilicas, that of San Pietro and that of Santa Maria Maggiore, two architectural masterpieces of the Roman era. This city is a masterpiece to visit in all its entirety, being completely still in medieval style, being part of the Tuscia Laziale. On the San Pietro hill, where the ancient Etruscan acropolis was located, there is the church of the same name, between Palazzo dei Canonici and three towers, it has been there since the 11th century. Suggestive to visit is the crypt, from the following century, with an elegant cross vault supported by 28 columns. The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, on the other hand, is located on the slopes of the same mountain but dates back to 852. The whole church is covered with beautiful frescoes. In the historic center, however, of interest, we find the belvedere park, the Lavello Tower and the characteristic Vicolo degli Artigiani.
