Walk to Volterra

Where: volterra
(Volterra (PI))
Genre: culture   useful information

In the heart of Tuscany, among the beautiful medieval villages that characterize it, Volterra stands out, dating back to the Etruscan era when Tuscany corresponded almost to Etruria. Volterra can also be reached on foot, after stopping the car in an open space used as a parking area and as a camper stop. From here it is possible to walk along a characteristic staircase (251 steps) which leads directly to Volterra passing through the Porta di Docciola, dating back to the 13th century and built by Mastro Stefano da Siena. Here is also the homonymous spring, strategically necessary when Volterra was placed under siege by the enemies. Collected in the ancient walls, Volterra finally contains a series of ancient buildings that tell its long history. Among these: the Palazzo De 'Priori which is the oldest town hall in all of Tuscany; the Cathedral dating back to 1120 and not far from the 13th century Baptistery, which is currently accessed by paying a ticket. Just outside the walls, finally, it is possible to admire the remains of the Roman theater dating back to the 1st century. A.D
