History in the Langhe

Where: sommariva-del-bosco
(Sommariva del Bosco)
Genre: culture   nature   useful information

The name Sommariva del Bosco derives from the fact that the oldest part of the town is located on the edge of a vast wood on the first mountain of the Roero Mountains, known as 'Bosco Popolare'. The time of constitution of the ancient village 'ad summam ripam nemoris' at the highest point of the forest is uncertain. There are theories and physical evidence that refer to different eras: the classical Roman and the medieval one. It is assumed that during the latter the first inhabited village was born, in this village characterized by nature and above all a lot of history. Despite the modesty of the people, the simplicity and the small nature of the place, visiting Sommariva in depth allows you to discover many interesting monuments. What is worth underlining is above all the presence of sacred monuments. For example, the church of Saints Ursula and Elisabetta in Piazza Seyssel and, in the same square, that of San Bernardino, once the seat of a religious congregation, characterize the lower part of the city. Instead, the upper part is dominated by two famous monuments: the church of San Giacomo and Filippo and the obviously medieval castle, inside which numerous events and exhibitions take place. Sommariva is a natural village, a treasure chest that holds a treasure made of history and intriguing elements.
