The Norman Castle of Arena, a small village in Vibonese

Where: arena
(Castello Normanno)
Genre: events    culture   folklore

The Vibonese hinterland includes numerous municipalities in the province of Vibo Valentia, in Calabria. Among these there are more or less small towns, such as Arena, a small provincial village that barely counts 1200 inhabitants, and was once inhabited by the Greeks. During the Middle Ages, it was the capital of a very extensive fiefdom, which is why it took the name of 'State of Arena'. Despite the small size of the territory, there is the presence of several places of interest dating back to the Middle Ages. Among these the most famous is certainly the Norman Castle, of which the video offers a suggestive overview. It was built in the 11th century and was the home of the Culchebret, an important and powerful Norman family. It is the oldest monument in the entire village, and it is precisely its seniority that saw it involved in a disastrous earthquake in 1783, which was joined by a flood in 1855. All these tragic natural events mean that the Castle, today, only a part of its perimeter walls and its corner towers remain.
