The Sanctuary of the Scala Santa in Campli

Where: campli
(Campli)
Genre: culture

Campli is a town of 7,000 inhabitants in the province of Teramo and is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. As well as for its architectural beauties, the town is famous for local food and wine products, in particular porchetta and truffles. Its territory was inhabited by the ancient Piceni population, of which numerous artifacts have been found that are currently preserved in the National Archaeological Museum, while in more recent centuries the area was ruled by the Farnese ducal family. An absolutely unmissable place for those visiting the city is the Sanctuary of the Scala Santa. According to legend, the latter was the stairway that Jesus climbed to go to Pontius Pilate before being sentenced to death. The faithful who want to receive the indulgence can walk it on their knees only 5 times a year. Its 28 steps are made of olive wood and on the sides of the staircase you can admire beautiful canvases with a sacred theme. At the top there is a small chapel where several relics of saints are kept, including two fragments of the Cross of Christ.
