The town is located along the Via Emilia and was founded in Roman times as a 'statio' or control of the trade route and place of exchange. Every year in March, the event that involves the best master chocolatiers in Italy takes place. The properties of the thermal waters were known since the Middle Ages, rich in bromine and iodine salts, they can be used in the historic plants, opened in 1870.
