The growth of Tuscania in medieval epic

Where: tuscania
(Tuscania)
Genre: culture

The most troubled historical period for the town of Tuscania, but at the same time the one that marked its greatest growth, is the Middle Ages. It was in fact in the middle years that Tuscania became important for the balance of the territory. In 574 it was the object of Lombard conquest, and later the Church became deeply rooted to the point that the Bishop, who had his seat here, controlled a very large territory. It is no coincidence that it was between the seventh and eighth centuries that many churches, basilicas and abbeys were built in Tuscania, including the churches of Santa Maria Maggiore and that of San Pietro. Charlemagne decreed Tuscania part of the patrimony of San Pietro, and so it will be until 1870. The following centuries saw many wars and struggles involving the municipality, but there was also a great artistic and cultural growth. Tragic events, such as the black plague and various earthquakes, deeply marked the territory. The Middle Ages in Tuscania can be said to have ended in 1494, when the troops of Charles VIII sacked the city.
