Mater Matute, already in ancient times was the approach facing east, suitable for commercial exchanges with the Greeks. The hills inhabited by the Alpigi were sacked by the Saracens and devastated by a tsunami. Traces of them remain in the Necropolis, with tombs in the shape of a uterus, a symbol of rebirth, and covered with Daunian steles, adorned with heads and shields. It was the mountaineers who returned to the village, driven by the search for a milder climate, in the sixteenth century. The white houses of the historic center date back to the mid-18th century and owe their splendor to the local limestone stones. Among these stands Palazzo Berecca, seat of the Town Hall. The beaches are popular destinations for the clarity of the waters and the white and pebbly sand. Walking along the path of Pini d'Aleppo you reach the Bay of the Faraglioni, gigantic white arches bathed by celestial waters. Near the port there are the ruins of ancient oil mills, dating back to the 4th century AD. C. The advice is to spend some time with the elderly, many of whom have spent their working years in Germany and are holding onto lost time, speaking the dialect they left behind and that no one understands anymore.
