Things to do in Italy > Emilian Po Valley

The city of the philosopher.

Where: mirandola
(Mirandola e dintorni)
Genre: culture   nature   wine and food

In the square we are welcomed by some students of the linguistic high school. They immediately lead us to the statue of the Renaissance philosopher Pico della Mirandola who wrote treatises on human dignity and its centrality with respect to the experimental study of natural things. It was a plunge into a new mentality, where the chains of divine punishment and dogma were broken. Through some maps you can see the urban development of the medieval city, well spread out in a star shape and fortified with walls and towers. Independent, the Pico government was the fulcrum of the frequentations of scholars and architects who embellished it in the Renaissance. Passed to the Este dominion, it suffered some sieges until 1711, when lightning struck the powder keg, ruining part of the Castle. Surrounding Area Wheat is grown and ripens by painting the slopes gold in early summer and small ponds dot the countryside hosting herons and ducks. Visiting the city you can enjoy excellent typical dishes such as tortellini, macaroni al pettine with meat sauce, while agriculture offers high quality products such as Parmigiano Reggiano and balsamic vinegar.
