Describe Pontremoli in 100 words: impossible!

Where: pontremoli
(Pontremoli)
Genre: culture

Pontremoli is an ancient and still splendid city, which is difficult to describe in just 1000 words. The territory in which it stands, one of the northernmost valleys of the Tuscany region located in Lunigiana, is rich in landscapes and suggestive pastures, such as that offered by the via dei Chiosi, which opens onto boundless fields. But Pontremoli is also and above all history. From via dei Chiosi you can see the castle, which dates back to the 11th century. It was a fortified structure that was erected in an elevated position for defensive purposes. The citizens call it Castello del Piagnaro, due to the custom of denominating 'piagne' the stones used to build the roofs. Another historic building of great beauty is the Cathedral, in the name of Santa Maria del Popolo, whose feast, celebrated with a solemn procession, falls on 2 July each year. The church was built in the seventeenth century, but its bell tower is even older, it dates back to the fourteenth century. It was once part of the Cortina di Cazzaguerra, built to separate the Guelphs from the Ghibellines.
