The frescoes of San Procolo in Naturno

Where: naturno/naturns
(Naturno)
Genre: culture

On the outskirts of the town of Naturno there is an ancient church which is of particular interest due to the numerous frescoes that adorn it. The church of San Procolo was built starting from the 7th century, in successive phases, but still today it has a very simple and essential architectural form. Yet the pictorial decorations are very rich and start already from the outside of the building. In the upper part of the church walls there is in fact a strip of Gothic frescoes that tell the Creation, while the drawings below tell the stories of Adam and Eve after the expulsion from the Earthly Paradise. Inside there are numerous pictorial cycles that cover the single nave. There are two hands that can be seen mainly. An artist has a minimalist style, he prefers the use of lines and duotone. The other, on the other hand, has a naive style, uses colors a lot, and frescoes the stories of the life of San Procolo. Above the entrance door a herd of oxen is portrayed, as San Procolo is the protector of livestock.
