History and description of the castle of Salorno

Where: salorno/salurn
(Salorno)
Genre: culture   fun

In Salorno, perched inside the limestone rock, there is a very small but also very suggestive castle. It is called Haderburg and its history begins in the first half of the 13th century, when the counts of Salorno wanted it to be erected. Later it became a Habsburg possession, and its structure was enlarged and strengthened at the behest of the emperor Maximilian in 1514. The castle was a very effective defensive work, but when it was abandoned after a few centuries it gradually deteriorated. Nonetheless, even as a ruin it has enjoyed some fame. One of the stories of the Brothers Grimm, for example, is set right in the rooms of the castle of Salorno. The Grimm stories were not originally meant for children, in fact, they were full of gory details. In addition, important personalities such as the painter Albrecht Dürer and Philip Melanchthon, Luther's collaborator and friend, stayed in Haderburg. Since 2003 the castle has been reopened to the public, and banquets and parties are held in the main courtyard.
