The beauties of Lake Lesina and its surroundings

(lago di Lesina)
Genre: useful information

Between the Puglie board and the Gargano there is a salt lake which is very popular as a tourist destination. The lake of Lesina extends for 20 kilometers, and is separated from the Adriatic sea only by a sandy and wooded strip which is called 'forest-island'. This strip is formed by the alluvial deposits of the Fortore river, and is connected to the sea by three mouths which are Schiapparo, Sant'Andrea and Acquarotta. To the east of the lake there is a nature reserve which was established in 1981 to allow animal restocking. The lake area has been inhabited since ancient times, from the Bronze and Iron Ages, as numerous archaeological finds have shown. The waters of Lake Lesina are rich in fish, especially eels and sea bass, which are a great resource for the inhabitants of the area. Here, in fact, fishing is practiced, but also bird watching. Around the lake there are several municipalities: the main one is Lesina, but there are also Marina di Lesina, which is a seaside resort; Apricena; Poggio Imperiale and San Paolo di Civitate.
