Mascali Vecchia and Mascali rebuilt after the eruption of Etna

The current urban layout of Mascali is quite recent. It dates back to 1937, when the town was rebuilt in a lictorian style by the fascist government. The old Mascali had been destroyed 9 years earlier in the most frightening eruption of the Etna volcano that she had remembered up to that moment. The previous eruption that led to the destruction of a town dates back to 1669. The 1923 event was devastating due to the fact that the mouth of the volcano that had opened was at a low altitude. It had then poured out a large amount of magma and covered 7 kilometers in just 2 days. Overall, the eruption lasted from 4 to 16 November. At first it was believed that Mascali was safe, because the flow of the casting had stopped. However, it resumed in the night, forcing people to leave their homes. Of the 4,000 displaced, only 1,000 found their homes intact. In addition to the inhabited area, vineyards and lemon groves were destroyed, as well as the industries that gave work to most of the people of the area.
