The Molochio waterfalls: a fairytale landscape in the heart of the Aspromonte

Where: molochio
(Le cascate di Molochio)
Genre: nature   useful information

Molochio is a Calabrian town located in the heart of the Aspromonte. it is a place rich in naturalistic beauties, such as the Mundu and Galasia waterfalls which attract many visitors every year. The path today is only used to reach the falls but long ago it was what coal workers did. In the city you can admire a beautiful viewpoint from Monte Trepitò, a natural terrace overlooking the plain of Gioia Tauro. From here, take the road that leads to Molochio, stopping at Mastro Marzio and starting the walk up to the waterfalls. The walk is not difficult and is well equipped with panels and indications. The route is suggestive and surrounded by nature, sheltered from the sun and with small bridges to cross the water areas such as the Barbi stream. At a certain point the path divides and while on one side you reach the two Galasia waterfalls, on the other you arrive at the Mundu waterfall. Obviously both can be visited, based on our choice. The Mundu waterfall is about twenty meters high and is surrounded by a particular type of fern, which seems to have a prehistoric origin. The Galasias are two different waterfalls, one lower down called 'Little Galasia' and the other higher up and even more suggestive, which opens downwards landing in a body of water where you can get wet.
