The Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena

Where: bolsena
(Bolsena)
Genre: folklore

Bolsena is a place known for its devotion to Santa Cristina, but in the religious sphere there is also another event that remains alive in the commemoration of the faithful. In fact, it is said that in 1263 a priest from Prague came to Bolsena precisely to pray at the tomb of the saint. The following day, before leaving, he also asked to be able to celebrate Mass on that tomb. As he pronounced the words of the consecration of the host, however, he was assailed by a doubt. He wondered if Christ really incarnated himself in that particle. At that moment the host turned red and the blood began to flow on the altar. The priest, amazed and frightened, hid everything between the sacred vestments and decided to tell the story to the pope, who was at the time in Orvieto. Having ascertained the miracle, Pope Urban IV decided to fix the feast of Corpus Domini. That event is still remembered today in the Cathedral of Bolsena due to the fact that the stones that were bathed by the blood poured from the transmuted host are still visible.
