Sant'Angelo Le Fratte, an open-air museum

Where: sant-angelo-le-fratte
(Sant'Angelo le Fratte)
Genre: events    culture

Sant'Angelo Le Fratte is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Basilicata, and not only for its naturalistic beauties. The village is in fact nestled in the center of Monte Carpineto, about 40 kilometers away from Potenza. What made this small town very popular and 'instagrammable', as the younger ones would say, was however the far-sightedness of the municipal administration and the inhabitants. To counteract the inevitable impending depopulation, in fact, starting from the 90s a local group, called Arte per la Valle, led by the artist Luciano La Torre, began to fresco the external walls of the houses. The paintings recall moments from the life of the village, linked above all to viticulture and the production of wine. So people began to take better care of their homes, and tourists started flocking to visit this open-air museum, made not only of paintings but also of statues and ceramics. The most important moment for social life is the Cantine Aperte event, which takes place around August 15th.
