The legend of Leo and Marino on Monte Titano

To tell the way in which the Republic of San Marino was born, which has always strenuously defended its freedom and independence, a story is told. Commentators are unanimous in saying that this is nothing more than a legend without a foundation of truth, but it is equally suggestive. In fact, it is said that in 257 the emperor Diocletian gave the order to rebuild the walls of Rimini, destroyed by the king of the Liburnians Demosthenes. Then several stone cutters arrived, including Leo and Marino, who were of Dalmatian origins. Both were sent to Mount Titano and remained there for 3 years. Leo retired to live on the mountain giving life to the oratory of San Leo. Marino returned to Rimini and remained there for 12 years, leading a life of penance and being ordained a deacon. Later he founded his own community on Mount Titano and worked many miracles, including the healing of the son of a wealthy widow. As a thank you, she donated the lands she owned to Marino, thus giving life to the land of San Marino.
