Dozza and its Murals

Where: dozza
(Dozza)
Genre: culture

Dozza is an Emilian town in the province of Bologna, rises 190 meters above sea level and has 1,100 inhabitants. It is a small medieval village, unique, known since the 60s as the 'town of murals'; over 200 have been counted, drawn on the walls of all the buildings in the town. For over half a century, the biennial of the painted wall has been held in Dozza, which attracts artists and visitors from all over the world. The murals deal with the most varied themes ranging from landscapes, vineyards, fields, scenes of peasant life, to political themes, to themes related to social problems and everything related to the territory. Fantastic themed paintings can also be admired. It was a wonderful intuition of the early 60s, the desire to create an open-air museum accessible for free to all. Behind each painting there is a story, some motivations. The idea is borrowed from Central America where street art has, however, an essentially protest function, with us the component of the possibility of free expression prevails. In recent years, the Dozza model has been exported, creating twinnings with other Italian municipalities, for the enormous pride of citizenship.
