Joppolo: the most hidden and wild Calabria

Where: joppolo
(Joppolo)
Genre: nature   useful information

Joppolo is a Calabrian village located on the Tyrrhenian side of the region, in the province of Vibo Valentia. The town extends at the foot of Mount Poro, offering the visitor not only the beautiful sea of Calabria but also the mountains and nature typical of the place. The peculiarity of the beach is linked to the presence of overhanging rocks, a jagged coast, which creates a breathtaking natural landscape. The sea represents not only a tourist attraction but also an economic resource, in fact fishing is one of the most practiced activities. There are two villages, or hamlets, that are part of Joppolo: Coccorino and Coccorinello. Separated by a stream and joined by a bridge, they have unclear origins but many legends revolve around them. In Coccorino there are two prestigious churches: the church of San Mercurio Martire, and the church of the Madonna Immacolata, both in Baroque style. Erected in a place where the Brazilian monks built a monastery, the church of San Sisto is another place of worship in the country. Caroniti is another fraction of Joppolo, known for the church of San Gennaro, particularly for the presence of a mosaic depicting the saint, on the main facade.
