Open the door of the Monteroduni Castle

Where: monteroduni
(Monteroduni)
Genre: culture

In the province of Isernia and not far from the Volturno river and the Mainarde, which we observe in the background of the video, stands the town perched around the Pignatelli Castle. The village was born on the occasion of the Saracen raids that waged war for the territory against the Beneventani Princes. The enemies destroyed every sacred building and the people of the valley took refuge on the promontory. The Castle rebuilt in 1300 has a rectangular plan with four cylindrical towers. The contrast of the color of the stones that build it with the dark foliage of the holm oaks, a typical castle forest that does not illuminate but which obscures and hides, is amazing. The large staircase in the courtyard leads to the elegant halls, frescoed and magnificent with ancient books, noble coats of arms and vestiges. In the village we visit the Lombard Church of San Michele Angelo, rebuilt after an earthquake, and the fifteenth-century stone Church of Santi Biagio and Nicola with the original wooden altar and the side altars in polychrome marble.
