Chamois, the car-free village

Where: chamois
(Chamois)
Genre: useful information

In the mountains of the Aosta Valley, lies the small scattered town of Chamois, a town of 111 inhabitants that said NO to cars. In fact, if you try to enter directions on google maps to reach this country by car, nothing will appear on the screen. Already in 1955, when the topic of sustainability was still unknown, the inhabitants decided they did not want to deface the landscape, thus denying access to cars. The municipality can be reached on foot via the 'les Seingles' mule track from Buisson, by bicycle along the Magdeleine and by cable car from Buisson. The territory is located in the middle Valtournenche and includes almost the entire valley of the homonymous torrent and of the Saverou; the highest point of the municipality is the Becca Trecare. Given its typically medieval feature and isolated from the worldliness and frenzy of the cities, it is considered a winter tourist destination thanks also to its ski lifts. Near the inhabited area extends Lake Lod, an alpine lake that can be reached with a chairlift starting from Chamois or the alternative via a climb on a path lasting about half an hour.
