The Garfagnana territory extends between the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, in Lucca, offering visitors a great variety of landscapes ranging from the mountains to the gentle hills. The municipalities that are part of it are numerous, mainly small villages characterized by churches and stone houses, and medieval buildings, surrounded by lush nature. Some examples of places and attractions to visit are: the old church of Gorfigliano, built on the ruins of an old castle and dedicated to San Giusto; the Fortress of the Verrucole, an imposing military garrison that today lives again thanks to historical events and re-enactments; the fortress of Mont 'Alfonso in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, dating back to the sixteenth century and surrounded by a long wall, as many as 7 bulwarks and 7 buildings that were intended for the troops; the Maddalena bridge over the Serchio river, known as the devil's bridge as legend has it that the construction was done by the devil himself; the bridge of Castruccio Castracani, dating back to the 13th century BC. C, located on the river Lima which marked the border between the cities of Lucca and Pistoia and was a place of passage for commercial activities.
