Excursion to the hermitage of San Benedetto and San Michele

Where: roccantica
(Monte Tancia)
Genre: nature   fun   useful information

Lying on a promontory and surrounded by walls from the year 1000, the village is surrounded by legends and mysticism. From the town you decide to walk up to the Hermitages which are also very famous for the adjacent walls equipped to climb the cliff in free climbing. The path is narrow and surrounded by branches of trees, very pleasant, and in half an hour, from the Church of San Valentino, leads to the Hermitage of San Benedetto. Embedded in the rock, it can be visited and its silence and stillness can be perceived between the natural walls or stone artefacts. While resting we admire a fresco by Jacopo da Roccantica depicting San Leonardo and Santa Caterina. Again on the way we can decide to go to the Dolina del Revotano, a deep depression due to an earthquake that in ancient times caused Roccantica to sink, according to legend, or to the hermitage of San Michele. This is a smaller rock sanctuary, consisting of a room that goes completely into the rock. Closed by a gate you can still admire the frescoes.
