Aieta: a village rich in history

Where: aieta
(Aieta)
Genre: events    culture   nature   wine and food

We are in the province of Cosenza, in Calabria, in a small but one of the most beautiful villages in Italy: Aieta. The view from here is magnificent: the sea of Policastro. In the historic center we can read what the noble medieval past of the village is, which becomes history: the white of the facades and the red roofs, alternate pieces of history such as the Renaissance palace of the sixteenth century, the Mother Church of Santa Maria della which overlooks the square main, the remains of the Convent of Francesco d'Assisi which houses the gates of the city, the 'Valley of the mills' on the Tronaturo stream, the stone portals of the noble palaces. Walkers can try to see the red lily by following in the footsteps of shepherds, farmers and charcoal burners, which lead to oak and beech woods. The Aietane mountains are particularly enchanting: the Ciagola massif, which has always been a destination for mountain enthusiasts, but also Curatolo and Calimaro. In this place, and it is not difficult to believe, the gastronomic heritage is also very rich, the protagonists are the cured meats, especially the Aieta Ham, and the Poverelli White Beans, an ecotype of local legumes. A place is best known through its events. In August, the “Europe of human capital” takes place with international meetings at the Renaissance palace, organized by the Renaissance Association and the “Mediterranean Book Fair”. Also in August, on the 12th, there is the “Aieta Ham Festival”. In September there is the 'Sagra Montanara', a market of typical products. If you want to see a place rich in history, a dream landscape and you are undecided between sea and mountains, I would say that Aieta is the right place.
